About Us

At Cancer Research UK, our mission is to beat cancer.

We are driven by purpose, achieving progress every day. But we must move faster. That’s why we are seeking talented individuals who share our vision—people like you.

Do you want to create moments of joy and hope, raise vital funds, and inspire action through exceptional events for the UK’s largest charity?

We’re offering an exciting opportunity for you to join us as an Area Events Manager. Join a bold, ambitious, and fun team working together to bring forward the day cancer is cured.

In this role, you’ll organise and deliver various Cancer Research UK events, including flagship outdoor mass participation events like Race for Life 5km, 10km, and Pretty Muddy. You may also work on Shine Night Walk, supporter conferences, engagement events, and virtual online events. While event delivery is a key focus, approximately 75% of your time will be home-based, with 25% spent in the field.

So far this year, our team has raised around £26 million through mass participation events. We’re looking for someone passionate about our cause to help us continue this success.

What Will I Be Doing?

You’ll plan and deliver a variety of events for Cancer Research UK. The focus will be on outdoor mass participation events, but you’ll also organise conferences, engagement events, and virtual online events.

  • Follow Processes: Deliver events in line with Cancer Research UK guidelines, processes, and deadlines.
  • Venue Research: Identify and assess new venues for outdoor and indoor events, building strong relationships to negotiate approvals and costs.
  • Supplier Coordination: Research, negotiate, book, plan, brief, and manage suppliers, including PA systems, first aid, caterers, florists, traffic management, and stewards.
  • Volunteer Management: Cultivate relationships with existing volunteers, recruit new ones, and oversee their welfare and experience during events.
  • Staff Leadership: Brief and manage event staff, offering feedback and coaching throughout.
  • Supporter Experience: Enhance the event experience with entertainment and by ensuring events are engaging and enjoyable.
  • Event Day Leadership: Lead and manage your event team, including staff, volunteers, and suppliers. Set up event sites and courses, oversee welfare, resolve any issues, and ensure the event runs smoothly.
  • Post-Event Administration: Gather feedback and complete administrative tasks following events.

What Skills Will I Need?

  • A passion for event planning.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships.
  • Strong organisational and multitasking abilities.
  • Proactive and solution-oriented, with a “can-do” attitude.
  • Proven problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work autonomously.
  • Leadership skills to motivate and guide a group.
  • Willingness to work approximately 10 weekends per year, outdoors, in any weather.
  • Physical capability to handle event-related tasks, such as walking event courses and moving equipment.
