About this Role

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Clinical Coder to join their Clinical Coding Department.

The Clinical Coding Department is responsible for abstracting and analysing complex clinical information from patients records and translating this into a coded format in line with National Standards. The post holder will enter encoded data onto appropriate computer systems to meet essential Trust requirements for statutory information and financial flows, working as part of a team of experienced trained staff across all specialties.

Key Responsibilities:
– Plan and prioritise own workload to meet departmental targets
– Obtain and accurately code medical information of inpatients and day case episodes using ICD10 and OPCS4.10
– Analyse and abstract complex clinical information from a variety of data sources
– Assign accurate, timely, complete, and consistent diagnostic and procedure coding to all inpatient episodes
– Input assigned clinical codes onto the Trust’s encoder system
– Advise the manager on the standards of information provided for clinical coding

Essential Requirements:
– 5 GCSEs A*-C including English Language, Science and Maths
– Experience of using Microsoft Windows, Word and Excel
– Thorough understanding of the role of clinical coding in the NHS
– Excellent communication and analytical skills
– High attention to detail

Desirable:
– Accredited Clinical Coder Qualification
– Knowledge of ICD-10, OPCS-4 coding schemes
– Specialist Paediatric coding experience
– Knowledge of HRGs and Payment by Results
