About this Role

York Archaeological Trust for Research and Excavation Limited, an educational and research charity, is looking for a new trustee specialising in finance to join its board during a period of development. Having celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022, the Trust builds on the vision that began with the Coppergate excavation in York and the opening of the JORVIK Viking Centre, harnessing archaeology for educational and public benefit. It engages more than 1.2 million people annually and runs centres of archaeology and conservation in York and Nottingham, working across the UK and internationally. With succession planning in mind for the role of Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee, the Trust is seeking a candidate with considerable professional financial expertise, ideally underpinned by a formal first-tier accounting qualification, proven commercial acumen and strong leadership skills to scrutinise, challenge and oversee the entirety of the Trust’s finances. Candidates with substantial experience of corporate or charity governance and strategic financial analysis will also be considered. The role involves four board meetings a year plus the AGM, with additional time on sub-committees or steering groups.
