About this Role
BBC Studios is hiring a Lead Architect for its .com engineering team, working across a news and content-driven website and mobile app ecosystem serving a very large daily audience. Rather than acting as a central approval gate, the postholder will create the conditions for good architectural decisions to emerge across teams, setting technical direction through principles, patterns, reusable blueprints and ‘paved roads’ while keeping ownership with the teams themselves. The role involves coaching engineers and tech leads on architectural trade-offs such as scalability, cost, coupling and resilience, and working with Product, Engineering and Delivery leadership on build-vs-buy and long-term platform investment decisions. Essential experience includes designing and evolving distributed systems, evolutionary architecture practices, modern engineering practice (CI/CD, observability, cloud-native), and a proven ability to influence without authority across multiple teams.
