Job Overview
Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a passionate and dedicated Consultant Psychiatrist to become a part of its established Specialist Mother and Baby Mental Health Service (SMABS). This permanent role offers flexibility, allowing for full-time, part-time, or job-sharing arrangements.
The SMABS service provides community-based perinatal mental health care across Bradford, Airedale, and Craven, aiming to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. The appointed candidate will join a multidisciplinary team based at Fieldhead Business Centre, contributing to the transformation and enhancement of perinatal mental health services.
This post has been created following funding expansion, enabling SMABS to support 5% of the local birth population in 2023/24. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Lian Chua (6PA) and a collaborative, supportive team committed to excellence.
Main Responsibilities
As the Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist, your role will include:
- Offering expert clinical care, including assessments for complex cases, diagnostic evaluations, medication reviews, pre-birth planning, and leading CPA meetings.
- Coordinating multidisciplinary team reviews, urgent assessments, and discharge planning for high-need patients.
- Providing clinical leadership and consultation to professionals outside the SMABS team in areas such as maternity, primary, and secondary care.
- Assisting in referral triaging and providing professional advice to services like Intensive Home Treatment and Single Point of Access.
- Supporting the development and enhancement of the SMABS service while fostering collaboration within the Integrated Care Board.
- Balancing in-person and remote working to deliver flexible services across the region.
- Engaging in weekly leadership meetings with the senior SMABS team, including consultants, clinical leads, and parent-infant therapists.

Qualifications and Requirements
Essential:
- Certificate of Completion of Training in General Adult Psychiatry (or within six months of completion).
- Eligibility for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register.
- Section 12 (2) MHA 1983 approval and Approved Clinician status.
Desirable:
- MRCPsych or equivalent qualification.
- Additional academic achievements, such as MSc or MD.
Experience:
Essential:
- Extensive experience in perinatal psychiatry.
- Strong clinical skills, integrating bio-psycho-social perspectives.
- Experience in mentoring junior staff and contributing to medical audits.
- Proven ability to appraise and apply clinical evidence effectively.
Desirable:
- Experience presenting at conferences or involvement in service reconfiguration.
- Practical research experience or demonstrated leadership in service improvement.
