Senior Accountant for Financial Reporting

Cancer Research UK’s Finance team’s integrity and skill in managing money donated via public generosity is critical to our organization’s seamless operation and future objectives, eventually assisting the charity in reaching our mission of curing cancer.

As the biggest charity in the UK, we have a broad and complicated set of statutory accounting and external reporting duties. In 2023/24, our expenditure was £692 million and our income was £684. We have various companies, including Trading (600+ outlets that produced £134 million in revenue) and Cancer Research UK Horizons (a world-class cancer research partner).

As a Senior Financial Reporting Accountant, you will be responsible for Cancer Research UK’s financial reporting and statutory accounts, which will include combining the accounts and meeting our external reporting obligations. You will also collaborate with auditors and provide assistance to finance colleagues and senior management throughout the organization to help decision-makers understand the financial implications of projects and choices. You will have the option to cycle within the Financial Reporting team, with a specific emphasis on either Cancer Research UK’s Group or Subsidiary accounts.

We’d love to have you join our mission if you’re a certified Financial or Group Accountant with experience producing statutory accounts and reporting for a big organization with several subsidiaries.

What am I going to be doing?

  • Producing the Cancer Research UK group’s mandatory annual report and accounting.
  • Statutory accounts are being prepared for subsidiaries and defunct entities. This comprises Cancer Research UK Horizons and Trading (about 600+ outlets).
  • Creating diverse financial datasets for internal and external publishing.
  • Working collaboratively with the rest of the finance team to create internal financial reports.
  • Reporting on Restricted Funds in Collaboration with the Scientific Research & Innovation Team
  • Serving as a primary point of contact for external and internal auditors.
  • Using your experience, you may give high-quality financial accounting assistance to finance colleagues and senior management, allowing decision makers to comprehend the effect of projects and choices.
  • assessing the effect of new accounting rules and guiding implementation programs.
  • Proactively collaborating with the whole financial team to:
  • When it comes to major agreements and transactions, make yourself the primary point of contact.
  • Increase their technical expertise and ensure they comprehend changes to accounting and regulatory frameworks and how they affect the organization’s financial strategy.
  • Rotating through Group and subsidiary accounts, focusing on one region at a time.

What skills will I need?

  • Qualified financial or group accountant with post-qualification experience (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated experience compiling statutory accounts and reporting for a big organization with several subsidiaries (preferably within a group structure).
  • Year-end auditing experience includes delivering audited accounts and reports while managing relationships with external auditors.
  • Strong technical expertise combined with an awareness of accounting principles (FRS 102 is required).
  • Charity SORP is preferable, which means we accept people without this experience.
  • Has developed good stakeholder connections and shown the ability to explain complicated financial information to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Medium/advanced Excel abilities – has previously dealt with big, complex data sets and many platforms (V-lookups, Pivot Tables, Macros).
  • Experience with Agresso is desired but not required, therefore we welcome people who have used other systems.
