Job Summary

This position offers an exceptional opportunity to join an established Neurological Service as a Consultant Psychiatrist. The ideal candidate will possess extensive expertise in treating survivors of acquired brain injuries, individuals with neurodegenerative disorders, and those with co-existing mental illnesses or complex physical health conditions. Patients at this unit may be detained under the Mental Health Act, supported through Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, or admitted informally.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

As a skilled Consultant Psychiatrist, you will be an expert in managing cases involving acquired brain injuries, neurodegenerative conditions, and co-morbid mental and physical health issues. The unit accommodates patients referred from psychiatric hospitals, prisons, and courts. The role involves working 7.5 hours per week at Badby Park and 30 hours per week at St Neot’s Hospital.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-quality care, lead clinical rounds, and conduct assessments of referrals.
  • Attend Care and Treatment Reviews, Manager Panel Hearings, and Mental Health Review Tribunals.
  • Offer supervision to junior staff.
  • Participate in the on-call rota alongside other Consultant Psychiatrists.
  • Chair multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and ensure effective implementation of the Care Programme Approach.
  • Evaluate medical services through audits and ensure evidence-based clinical practices.
  • Work with external stakeholders to facilitate the reintegration of service users into the community.
  • Train and develop staff across various disciplines.
  • Deliver clinical governance responsibilities.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Administer the Mental Health Act and adhere to clinical policies and standards.
  • Participate in research initiatives and attend relevant courses and conferences as part of CPD.

About the Role Locations

Badby Park: A historical manor house offering a serene environment, modern facilities, and stunning views. The site is easily accessible from Daventry, Rugby, Northampton, and Banbury.

St Neot’s Hospital: Situated in Cambridgeshire, approximately 50 miles north of London, this location is set in a scenic area near the Great River Ouse and offers good transport links, including a railway station on the East Coast Main Line.


Person Specification

Qualifications:

  • Medical qualification with MRCPsych or equivalent.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong leadership and decision-making abilities.
  • Understanding of current developments in psychiatry, mental health legislation, and case management.
  • Desirable: Previous experience as a consultant or in a management role.

Disclosure and Registration Requirements

This role is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, requiring submission to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) for a check of prior criminal convictions.
